・『The former Kesen Junior High School※,which stands facing the mouth of Kesen River,is located in an area within Rikuzentakata City where the tsunami hit the earliest. On that day,the earthquake occurred right in the middle of a choir practice that had been going on in preparation for a graduation ceremony in the gymnasium. The students were all able to immediately evacuate to higher ground thanks to routine disaster prevention education and remained unharmed, but before long, the three-story reinforced concrete building flooded all the way to the roof due to the tsunami. This school building, with fresh scars from the tsunami, has become an earthquake memorial ruin, and is preserved and utilized as a place for etching the tragedy and lessons learned from the tsunami into our hearts.※Kesen Junior High School closed ato the end of March 2018,and became integrated with another school.』
(Remains from the earthquake:Kesen Junior High School)…『【被災前の気仙中学校】気仙中学校は、1947年(昭和22年)創立、被災した校舎は1981年(昭和56年)に新校舎として竣工。 【Kesen Junior High School before the disaster】Kesen Junior High School was founded in 1947,and the now damaged school building was completed in 1981 as a new school building at the time.At the local Kesen's Kenka Tanabata Festival, students often performed with drums and flutes. The school also played a role being the center of the community. After the disaster,in 2018,the school closed the curtain of its 71_year history by merging with other schools. The school building of the former Kesen Junior High School, which was the closest junior high school to the sea in the area affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami,is located at the mouth of the Kesen River that flows into Hirota Bay.You could see a beautiful landscape of the scenic Takata Matsubara and Hirota Bay from the school.Due to its vicinity to the sea, there were frequent disaster prevention drills to prepare for tsunami waves in the event of a large earthquake. Each year, the school had organized disaster prevention lectures, checked for the best evacuation routes and sites, and also conducted evacuation drills when tsunami warnings and advisories were issued.Due to their diligent everyday preparations, the students were able to take quick actions to evacuate during the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami.【被災状況】2011年(平成23年)3月11日14時46分巨大地震発生。 【Damage situation】A huge earthquake occurred at 14:46 on March 11,2011.All the students who were attending school that day were practicing chorus for the graduation ceremony at the gymnasium.Due to their diligent everyday preparations, all the students and staff who were present at the time had safely evacuated to the hill immediately. But the tsunami crossed the river embankment and reached the roof of the school building. As a result, the three_story school building was submerged in a few minutes. The exterior of the school building remained, but the tremendous power of the tsunami destroyed the interior, where most of the fixtures and equipment were swept away. All traces of a school life was instantly taken away. The gymnasium where the students had been, was also gone.【保存・活用活動】大津波の生々しい爪痕が残る気仙中学校は、日頃の防災学習の大切さを伝える震災遺構として保存・活用されています。・【Preservation/Utilization Activities】Kesen Junior High School, where the vivid scars of the great tsunami remain,is preserved and utilized as a disaster remain that conveys the importance of daily disaster prevention learning.』
